HIGH LEVEL, AB and District
Community Profile

High Level is an up and coming community located in the Footner Lake Forest, the largest forest in Alberta. Encompassing 19 million hectares of land and half a million hectares of water.

It is the connecting link of Highway 58 east and west and 35 north and south, as well as being a major stop for CN Rail on its way to Hay River in the Northwest Territories.  It is serviced 6 days a week by Greyhound, with air service with Central Mountain Air.

Natural resources have always been pivotal to the economic base of High Level with Oil and Gas and Forestry being the major industries while agriculture provides a healthy stabilizing factor to the region.

Oilfield exploration came to High Level in the 1960's and with it came numerous related service companies, which are based here because of the central location.  High Level is proud to be home to the provinces largest sawmill, TOLKO INDUSTRIES LTD. as well as a new OSB plant FOOTNER FOREST PRODUCTS, both of which employ a total of approximately 750 full time employees. From this comes numerous spin-off benefits for the local economy in the establishment of associated service businesses.

This northern wilderness which was once home to the wild and free offers people a unique variety of wilderness experiences such as hiking, camping, fishing, hunting, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. High Level's very own snowmobile club, The Watt Mountain Wanderers had the honour of hosting the Alberta Snowmobile Association Jamboree in the spring of 2001. A total of 300 riders from all across Alberta participated in the event and a great time was had by all those who attended. They were recently named Snowmobile Club of the year by the Alberta Snowmobile Association.

Few people realize that High Level and district is home to more than 150 different species of birds that breed in the area and is situated in the Pacific and Central waterfowl flyways. Zama and Hay Lakes are internationally known as staging grounds for Canada and Snow Geese.

Our cultural diversity is as vast as is the local industrial base. Our Aboriginal community makes up approximately one third of the population of the Northwest region, the Mennonite population makes up approximately another third of the population and a mix of other cultures make up the last third. The Aboriginal peoples were the original settlers of this area and used the site where High Level is now located as a stopping place on their way to and from the fur trading posts in Fort Vermilion.

Recreation in High Level includes a 25 meter indoor swimming pool, home to the very active local swim club, a 3 sheet curling rink, and an indoor ice rink that is well utilized by the Minor Hockey Association that produced not
only one provincial champion last year but two.

Summer based activities can take place on the many ball diamonds, tennis and basketball courts or the 18-hole golf course where you can partake in the unique experience of golfing under the midnight sun.
