High Level is an up and coming
community located in the Footner Lake Forest, the largest
forest in Alberta. Encompassing 19 million hectares of land and half a
million hectares of water.

- It is the connecting link of
Highway 58 east and west and 35 north and south, as well as being a
major stop for CN Rail on its way to Hay River in the Northwest
Territories. It is serviced 6 days a week by Greyhound, with
air service with Central Mountain Air.
Natural resources have always
been pivotal to the economic base of High
Level with Oil and Gas and Forestry being the major industries while agriculture provides a healthy
stabilizing factor to the region.

- Oilfield exploration came to
High Level in the 1960's and with it came numerous related service
companies, which are based here because of the central location. High Level is proud to be home
to the provinces largest sawmill, TOLKO INDUSTRIES LTD. as well as a
new OSB plant FOOTNER FOREST PRODUCTS, both of which employ a total of
approximately 750 full time employees. From this comes numerous spin-off
benefits for the local economy in the establishment of associated
service businesses.

- This northern wilderness which was
once home to the wild and free offers people a unique variety of
wilderness experiences such as hiking, camping, fishing, hunting,
cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. High Level's very own
snowmobile club, The Watt Mountain Wanderers had the honour of hosting
the Alberta Snowmobile Association Jamboree in the spring of 2001. A
total of 300 riders from all across Alberta participated in the event
and a great time was had by all those who attended. They were recently
named Snowmobile Club of the year by the Alberta Snowmobile Association.

- Few people realize that High
Level and district is home to more than 150 different species of birds that
breed in the area and is situated in the Pacific and Central waterfowl
flyways. Zama and Hay Lakes are internationally known as
staging grounds for Canada and Snow Geese.

- Our cultural diversity is as
vast as is the local industrial base. Our Aboriginal community makes up
approximately one third of the population of the Northwest region, the Mennonite population makes
up approximately another third of the population and a mix of other
cultures make up the last third. The Aboriginal peoples were the original
settlers of this area and used the site where High Level is now located
as a stopping place on their way to and from the fur trading posts in
Fort Vermilion.

- Recreation in High Level
includes a 25 meter indoor swimming pool, home to the very active local
swim club, a 3 sheet curling rink, and an indoor ice rink that is well utilized by
the Minor Hockey Association that produced not
- only one provincial champion
last year but two.

- Summer based activities can
take place on the many ball diamonds, tennis and basketball courts or
the 18-hole golf course where you can partake in the unique experience of
golfing under the midnight sun.

- Other recreational activities
include bowling, visiting the local library, which also includes a mini
bookstore, or being a part of the very successful local theatre group.

- The Mackenzie Crossroads Museum
host a variety of events annually, one of them being the Art Show and
Sale which show cases local artists of all levels of talent and media.

- Families will find everything
they need and more with the addition of a new middle school as well as a
Christian School bringing the total number of schools to 4 providing
education for all children from kindergarten to grade
- 12. A Day care is available as
is a playschool and a Headstart program. NAIT College offers a
variety of courses i.e. adult education, vocational and technical
courses.

- Health Services include a
medical clinic with a total of 6 full-time physicians on staff, Community
Health and Home Care Services and a 26 bed hospital, a completely new facility
which opened April 2004.

- The High Level District Chamber
of Commerce is very active in the economic development of the community
and is host to such events as the Annual
Trade Show, Get to Know You
Night and is proud sponsor of the High Level Trade Coin.
